Joanne Greenberg was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1932. She rose to fame under the pseudonym of Hannah Green. This was for her acclaimed novel "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden". The book was adapted for a film and a play. Joanne has written fourteen novels and four short story collections. Rites of Passage is one of these collections. Joanne has suffered from schizophrenia but has not let it control her life. She continues to give seminars on story writing, she writes regularly and finds time to teach Latin and anthropology Her awards include the Harry and Ethel Daroff Memorial Fiction Award and the Jewish Book Council of America award in 1963 for her novel The King's Persons. This novel concerned the massacre of the Jewish population at York Castle in 1190.
