Henri Charriere was sent to a penal colony in French Guiana for a murder he did not commit. Having been captured after his first escape he received solitary confinement in Devil's Island as it was thought that there no escaping that. But he did escape.This book was translated by the adventure writer Patrick O'Brian. Henri Charriere died in on July 29 1973.
